Today is International Edible Book Day! Started in 2000, the Edible Book Festival is often celebrated throughout March and April with various events around the world, but the official day is April 1st because Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who studied and wrote about the relationship between culture and food, was born on April 1, 1755 (he is the originator of the phrase "Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you who you are"), and because it's April Fool's Day and the idea of "eating your words" is a pun-y thing. :) (Here's a link to the original Edible Book Festival website, but it is no longer updated. The Facebook page is still a little active & has lots of photos.)
Make sure to check your local library, college, art museum, community center, or other places like that to see if there is an Edible Book event near you!

Earlier in March, my daughter's elementary school had an Edible Book event and contest to coincide with Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss' birthday. Smalls has been loving the various Pokémon manga series, so we decided to make an edible creation centered around that! Because the contest was going to be judged by the whole student body (by voting with tokens after seeing all of the creations), we thought we'd construct a pokémon that most people would be familiar with; Pikachu, of course! So we made Pikachu reading manga. And we won Best in Show/First Place!!
Yay! It's Ezran's birthday (March 19)! And you know that that kid is a fiend for jelly tarts, so to celebrate, I'm sharing the jelly tart recipe that I submitted for The Dragon Prince Recipe Zine late last year year.
This recipe is made with persimmons, which we learn is what type the jelly filling is in season 1 episode 3 (thank you, Claudia), as Ezran leaves orange, persimmon jelly handprints on the huge picture frame that is actually a secret door (and then again on the stones in the secret tunnel). Oops, Ezran!
Yay, Grookey! A cute, monkey-like grass-type pokémon–and one of the three starters for the new Galar region in the upcoming Pokémon: Sword and Shield (late 2019)! Grookey seems like such a sweetie-pie, full of energy and curiosity. :) I really love the vibrant green color, which translates well to a smoothie.
Smalls loves Pokémon so I made her a special dessert for Christmas: a simple panna cotta premier ball! I thought I'd do a quick drop of the recipe, in-case any of you wanted to try it for New Year's. :)

Premier balls are pretty much like regular pokéballs in the games, but they are a more elegant design of white with a red stripe and circle. They are also special in that you can get one as a bonus if you buy 10 regular balls at a time. The only other times you can obtain one is from a little kid in the Devon Corp. building in Rustboro City, and by buying it in a boutique in Lumiose City.
I recently saw The Grinch, the Illumination computer animated adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with my little family and really enjoyed it! I kind of want to see it again. :) We re-watched the 2000 live-action adaptation with Jim Carrey a few days later, and then a few days after that re-watched the 1966 animated TV special. I did check the library for the original 1957 Dr. Seuss book, but of course it was checked out, it being Christmastime and all. ;)
The new Grinch adaptation is different from the others in that it is gentler. I'm not sure how to put it really but that's what came to mind. It might sound lame, but it really appealed to me. The Grinch isn't cruel in this one (well, he's not "nice" either), and no one is cruel to him. He's simply a person who is negative and anti-social because of past experiences and the subsequent self-imposed isolation. He's a brilliant inventor and, different from the past iterations, is good to his dog Max. Also, there is no romance (thank goodness!) like there was in the live-action adaptation. And no adult humor. It really is a great family movie that's perfect for little and big kids.
Ack! The 8th and final season of Voltron: Legendary Defender premiers tomorrow on Netflix! It has been such a wild and fun ride and I'm sad to see it draw to a close, but am looking forward to how things culminate and conclude. Those boys need some rest!

Last season (season 7, episode 5) Hunk was his resourceful gourmet self again and made some yummy-looking breakfast burritos for the gang while they were all stranded in space in their lions. Though he procured the ingredients from creatures and in ways that the other paladins didn't want to know about, when Hunk was making the food it looked like bell peppers, mushrooms, avocado slices (though cut from a vegetable resembling a zucchini), salt, verde sauce or guacamole, and flour tortillas.
It is fantastic show with Scandinavian influences in folkloric content and setting/color pallet, with fun storylines and great characters. The main character Hilda often goes adventuring (exploring and adventuring is her thing) and her mom makes sure she has sandwiches packed in her satchel, along with peppermint tea.
The Dragon Prince animated series premiered on Netflix on September 4th (2018) and it is so good! It's an epic fantasy with action, adventure, family drama, politics, magic, humor, a huge quest, and food!
We learn that Claudia, dark magic user and daughter to the king's advisor, likes peanut butter (loves it maybe? She likes to share her PB breath with others), and later on, the main character that has a crush on her is obviously having a lovey-lovey dream with her in it and says he was dreaming about peanut butter sandwiches when he's caught. So I thought it would be fun to combine Claudia's dark magic and love of peanut butter in an easy recipe!
Yasmin registered Alex's confused look and added, "That's rice and lamb––or chickpeas, if you're vegetarian like me––all mashed together inside squash, cooked with lemon juice, mint, and a ton of garlic."
"Sounds delicious," Alex said, stomach grumbling.
As Yasmin had promised, there wasn't much of a selection in the cabinet beneath the kitchen sink, just bread, stale crackers, a few cans of tuna fish, and a jar of store-bought peanut butter. After digging behind some cleaning supplies, however, Alex discovered a half-filled box of Froot Loops only slightly past its expiration date.
"Look at this!" he exclaimed, showing the box to the uninterested cat. "My favorite! If it was Cap'n Crunch or Grape Nuts, I might have given up all hope, but this makes me think that everything might end up okay!" He popped a handful of Froot Loops into his mouth; they were stale but delicious.
