Kuroneko Doubutsu Doonatsu (Animal Donut) | Trigun

Japanese animal doughnuts, "doubutsu doonatsu" (or "donyatsu"), are doughnuts decorated to look like uber cute animals (here's an article from Kotaku about them) like frogs, bears, cats, dogs, and pigs. They've become so popular that there's even a doubutsu donyatsu manga and anime series (site here).
With Halloween right around the corner I thought it'd be fun to pair this doughnut animal concept with a black cat. But it's got to be a black cat from fiction so I thought what about Kuroneko (shown right), the little black cat in one of B's favorite anime series, "Trigun"? And then B reminded me that the main character Vash (shown above) looooves doughnuts, so it's perfect! Kuroneko-sama, literally (very respected) "Ms. Black Cat" in Japanese, is a random little black cat with huge eyes that appears in every episode of the "Trigun" anime series and sporadically in the manga (comics).

Vash's Kuroneko-sama Doubutsu Doonatsu

Ingredients (per 1 doughnut):
Plain Cake Doughnut
Dark Chocolate Fudge Frosting
2 Candy Corns (or you can use whole almonds)
Cherry Flavored Tootsie Fruit Roll
Lemon Flavored Tootsie Fruit Roll
Chocolate Jimmies (optional)

Important Items:
Parchment Paper or Foil
Wire Rack (cake cooling rack)
Small Round Cookie Cutter

Directions:
1. Line a tray with parchment paper or foil & place the wire rack on top. Place your doughnut on the rack & press the 2 candy corns, vertically, into the top of the doughnut like ears. Open the frosting (make sure you remove the foil circle) & microwave the container for 30 seconds. Stir & then microwave for 30 seconds more. The frosting should be thin & pourable. Spoon the chocolate frosting over the doughnut & protruding candy corns in a circular motion. Pour several coats if needed to cover the candy & top & most of the sides of the doughnut (don't worry about the bottom). Let sit about 20 mins to solidify.
Note: As you can see, the excess frosting will fall through the rack to the tray below. After the doughnut decorating is all done & solidified you can scoop the fallen frosting up & put it back in the  container.
2. Unwrap the Tootsie Roll candies & flatten them out with your fingers. Cut 3 tiny triangles from the pink. Stretch 2 of them into long triangles & put them on the ears of the chocolate-covered doughnut. Slightly round the bottom of the last triangle & place it on the front of the doughnut for the little mouth (a toothpick might help with the placement). Using one side of a small round cutter, cut half a circle in the lemon candy & then cut another, opposing, half circle just under it (see image above) to create an eye. Repeat this for eye #2 & form the pieces a little bit to more closely resemble Kuroneko's eyes. Next, place both eyes on the front of the doughnut, close together.
3. Remelt the frosting in the microwave for a few seconds & then dip a toothpick in the chocolate & carefully draw a vertical line down the center of each yellow eye to create the thin pupil (refer to photos). If you have chocolate jimmies (sprinkles) find 4 long ones & stick two on either side of the cat face (I didn't do this for Kuroneko, but did for Jiji shown at the bottom of this post).
