Natsume's (Edible) Book of Friends

If the Book of Friends was really made of food, Nyanko-Sensei would have gobbled it up a long time ago (and maybe Natsume with it)! ;)

Natsume's Book of Friends, or Natsume Yuujinchou in Japan, is a beautiful, long-running manga series by Yuki Midorikawa that has also been adapted into several seasons of anime. I think of it as having a "slice-of-life" genre feel combined with the fantasy of youkai, or Japanese spirits and demons. The story follows a teenager named Natsume and how he balances and navigates his interactions with youkai, who he has the special sight to see, and his regular life with adopted family and school friends.

Nyanko-sensei Cookie Pops | Natsume's Book of Friends

Natsume's Book of Friends (Natsume Yuujinchou in romanized Japanese) by artist and author Yuki Midorikawa is my all-time favorite manga and anime series. I've been reading, watching, and collecting it for years so I thought it was high time I showed my love for it here on the blog!

The way I describe the story in a nutshell is "slice-of-life with yokai", yokai being the word in Japan for supernatural beings/creatures (to put it very simply). Natsume, the main character, was born with the ability to see yokai and interact with them. The story focuses on the impact this has had on his life, in both the human world and world of yokai, and how, through various positive and negative experiences, he matures and begins to reconcile the two, learning that they are sometimes not all that different. Perhaps reticent by nature and certainly taciturn for preservation, appearing aloof and slightly frail, Natsume proves time and again to be passionate, loyal, brave, and possess a deep well of strength both physically and emotionally. Nyanko-sensei, a large and powerful yokai who chooses to be seen in the form of a plump cat, similar to that of a maneki-neko (or luck cat figure), is always by Natsume's side (unless he's off drinking with his pals or pilfering sweets). He acts as Natsume's mentor and bodyguard, and, though he tries to act tough and deny any real attachment to the boy outside of practicality and personal gain, both the readers and Natsume know he's a softy at heart, willing to protect Natsume even in the face of danger to himself.

Soot Sprite Cookie Pops | Spirited Away & Totoro

Susuwatari, meaning "wandering soot" in Japanese, or simply soot sprites or dust bunnies in English, are little spirits created by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. They make appearances in the animated films "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) and "Spirited Away" (2001). In the former, they live in an old house that has been uninhabited for at a least a little while before the movie begins. When the new tenants move in, a father & his two young daughters, the soot sprites are discovered by the children in the dusty attic. The family then good-naturedly prays for the spirits to move on, as the house is now occupied, and, after holding a meeting, the soot sprites float away during the night to find a new home.

Toothless Cookie Pops | How to Train Your Dragon

To celebrate the theatrical release of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" this Friday (6/13/14) I give you these yummy, cutie-pootie Toothless cookie pops! I've been waiting so long to share these with you. I'm really pleased with how the design turned out! It's so fun to imagine details of a food creation and then put those thoughts into action and come up with a finished product. And Toothless' adorable face was simply asking to be made into a cookie pop. Have fun making and eating–ack! poor Toothless' head!

The "How to Train Your Dragon" movies and "Dragons: Defenders of Berk" TV series from Dreamworks Animation are based on Cressida Cowell's How to Train Your Dragon book series which began in 2004. Love me some movies and such made from books!

Kiki's Cake Cookie Pops | Kiki's Delivery Service

Remember that scene in Studio Ghibli's  "Kiki's Delivery Service" (1989) when little witch Kiki is surprised with a personalized cake from a nice elderly woman? Kiki previously helped the woman make a scrumptious looking herring-and-pumpkin-pot-pie (it's on "the List"!), and then delivered said pie atop her broom to the lady's granddaughter. Even though making deliveries is Kiki's job, she went above and beyond to help the woman (her oven was broken and Kiki was in a time crunch, etc.) because Kiki is an honest and determined sort of person. This is what the lady wants to repay with her gift and calls Kiki to her home for a special "delivery".
